Addition of Point Arena-Stornetta
On March 11, 2014, fourteen years and two months after Proclamation 7264, President Barack Obama signed Proclamation 9089, expanding the California Coastal National Monument to include Point Arena-Stornetta. In this proclamation, President Obama stressed the dependence of these areas on one another, “with vital and dynamic exchange of nutrients and organisms being essential to maintaining their healthy ecosystems. He noted that expanding the National monument to include the Point Arena-Stornetta Public Lands, “would present exemplary opportunities for geologists, archeologists, historians, and biologists to use the historic and scientific objects in these lands to further illuminate the evolving relationship between California's abundant coastal resources and its human inhabitants”. Point Arena was also noted for having significant ecological and historical value.
